Postdoctoral position at LLR and LAL on imaging calorimetry and machine learning

The Laboratoire Leprince Ringuet (LLR) and the Laboratoire de l'Accélérateur Linéaire (LAL) offer a postdoctoral position which has been granted by the excellence cluster 'P2IO' of laboratories in the South of Paris.

The groups play a leading role in the development of highly granular calorimeters as required e.g. for precision measurements at a future linear electron positron collider at the TeV scale.

The work will comprise the analysis of real and simulated data recorded with the prototypes of the CALICE collaboration. The study seeks to optimise the two particle separation in the granular calorimeters. This goal is addressed by applying and developing advanced machine learning algorithms which extract characteristic features of hadronic showers.

The development of new algorithms requires a decomposition of the different stages of a shower. This will bring new insight into the physics of hadronic cascades. In the long term the results should lead to an optimisation of the reconstruction algorithms for detectors at a future LC. It is also intrinsic to the nature of the position to establish synergies with other fields of science.

The described work is situated at the interface between particle and detector physics and applied mathematics and the postdoctoral fellow will work together with leading experts in both fields.

Candidates are required to have Ph.D. in physics, computer science, mathematics, or engineering by date of appointment. Research experience in experimental high energy physics or a related field and data analysis (for physicists) or research experience in applied statistics or machine learning (for computer scientists) is required. The successful candidate is expected to have demonstrated skills in data analysis and a good knowledge of C++. Experience in the development of tracking algorithms is desirable but not requested.

The position is available for a period of two years starting on the 1/10/12. Salary and benefits will commensurate with the ones of a Level

2 young Researcher (CR2) at the CNRS, approximately 2500 Euros/month according to the experience.

The job offer is oriented towards candidates which are less than two years after the end of the PhD thesis.

In case of interest please send a one page letter of motivation, your cv and the name and addresses of three referees until the 10/6/12 to Dr. Vincent Boudry (vincent.boudry@llr.in2p3.fr), Dr. Balazs Kegl (kegl@lal.in2p3.fr) and Dr. Roman Pöschl (poeschl@lal.in2p3.fr). Please be ready for an interview in the second half of June.
